S60 freeware YouTube video player

Today we all got a new great freeware application for our S60 devices. This is a freeware YouTube player which is most wanted app of this year. Its name is emTube. This is standalone S60 application allows you to Search, List and Watch YouTube video clips directly on your mobile. It can play videos while they downloading to your device. Also you can store downloaded videos to device's memory. I'm not sure if it supports YouTube authentication to access to restricted content, but anyway functionality of this app is just awesome. Here more screenshots of this app:

Thanks for the review to Allabout.

S60 and UIQ PC remote file manager and backup

Sometimes we need to transfer a huge amount of files to or from the phone (often to the MMC card). Also we need to transfer a whole directory structure or do backup operations for phone's memory card in case if we what to change it to a new one without losing all the data and without using PC card-reader. Here the solutions I've found at some "PC phone tools" forum thread. The first one is PC File Manager. This application from Epocware gives you an opportunity to manage files on your phone from your PC. It works only for old versions of Nokia and SE devices like Nokia 7650, 3650, 6600 ans SE UIQ P800, P900. Moreover this is shareware application.

The second application was Symbian FileExplorer. This is just devices sis app. Symbian FileExplorer gives you full access to your Symbian phone file system from your PC over Bluetooth (OBEX). Using this application you can access via BT to the all content of your phone memory and do all file operations in bulk mode. This is also a shareware application.

There is also Oxygen Phone Manager but it can't transfer plain files. The only freeware solution for this task for Nokia S60 is the original Nokia PC Suite application, but backup and file transfer in this application doesn't copy all files. For UIQ there is free Symbianware DesktopFileMan.

Cheap international mobile calls are possible now

There is a new great service EQO which solves of most painful problems for mobile users - international long-distance calls on the go is very expensive. But we want calling for free or at least very cheap. Now we have a solution. This is new VoIP service EQO. What the EQO is? EQO is small Java midlet installed to your mobile phone by SMS text message for free. When you call somebody with EQO, the application automatically instructs the phone to call the local number, and EQO routes the call over its international calling network. This service available in almost 40 countries all over the world. Rates are very-very low. This service a little bit expensive than Fring, Truphone or other true VoIP SIP solutions, but it works on every modern Java-enabled phone. Other clients require smartphones with Symbian or Windows Mobile.

Symbian 9 Platform Security and capabilities hacked - copy any files and DRM content

Reading this post we can learn about the big security vulnerability of our Nokia and Sony Ericsson Symbian 9 smartphones. We need to do following steps:

  • Take an update firmware package (currently supported only by Nokia for S60 smartphones).
  • Edit some part of it, where all those capabilities are listed that a user can grant to a 3rd party application upon installation.
  • Update these capabilities.
  • Flash this modified firmware.
I think we all now can watch DRM content for free on S60 devices like N95 or N73. This will be the big surprise for all content providers. Also we can browse all files in our smartphones including Private folders!

Everybody wants to get some free stuff for mobile phone. The most popular content for mobile phones are ringtones. But there are other high demanded content for mobiles including Nokia Symbian S60 devices. This is themes and games. Platform Nokia Symbian S60 allows to developers to make very rich and high-quality themes for S60 devices. Many of PC and game console games can be ported to Nokia Symbian S60 mobile phones. This gives us thousands of themes and hundreds of game titles for S60 devices. How we can download all of them freely?

The first way is to check dedicated forums and look what they can give to us. The most well-known forums dedicated to Nokia S60 software and freeware are imserba.com, noeman.org, symbian-freak.com, gsmarena.com, allaboutsymbian.com etc.

The second way is to check mobile portals like Imserba, My-Symbian.com. This portals has huge collections of free themes and games for a lot of mobile phone models including Nokia S60 devices. Go there and start downloading.

The third way is to check some blogs which collects freeware and downloaded content for mobile phones. Most of them hosted on blogspot servers. The examples of such blogs are Symbian-Freeware and my blog.

The fourth way is to subscribe on one of Yahoo! Groups dedicated to Symbian software. Examples of such groups are SymbianSeries60 and MOBILEMEDIA_SIS.

Free GPS map navigation for Nokia Symbian phone

There is only one free native Symbian option for your Nokia Symbian smartphone if you like to use free GPS maps navigation software. It is Nokia Maps, also known as Smart2go. The site where you can download this application is here. By the way it now officially has been updated for almost all of S60 3rd edition devices (including E61(i), E61i, E65, N73, N76, N93i, Nokia 6120 classic and the ones with Nokia Maps preinstalled - E90 Communicator, N95 and 6110 Navigator), not only N Series as before, but for E Series devices too. Most interesting thing that it is now available for Symbian Series 60 (S60) 2nd Edition devices Nokia N70 and N72. I hope we can install it on 6630, 6680, 6681, 6682 devices too. Symbian VoIP SIP applications

Symbian VoIP SIP applicationsThere is a lof of free and not really free VoIP clients for Symbian Nokia and Sony Ericsson devices like BaraBlu, AQL, Mobiboo, Skype, RebTel, Jajah, Truphone and possibly others. But we talk now about really free software clients that allows to use SIP gateways on Symbian 9 and Symbian 8 smartphones. You always can use special edition of Nokia smartphones Ineternet Edition - N80 IE and others. These devices have embedded SIP client that can be configured to work with any SIP gateway server. But what to do with other Symbian smarphones? We need to install some free SIP client on the smartphone. One of these applications is Fring. Since version 3.0 it allows you to call not only to Skype contacts, but configure a SIP service and directly use it. Now you can call for free to many countries with SIP services like Gizmo, Free World Dialup or bunch of Betamax services like VoipStunt, VoipDiscount, VoipCheap, NetAppel, Voipbuster, SparVoIP etc.
Update: Read about new Free Skype VoIP client in Nokia phones, it's ready to be released in Nokia N97 phone

Native Skype VoIP client application on Symbian phones - not until real HSxPA

If you are waiting for Skype client on Symbian you probably should suspend your hopes until arrival HSxPA or other next-generating networks. Skype still not release it's client for Symbian. As we know only phones run Symbian so Skype don't ready to play on this field. In the meantime there are a bunch of third-party solutions that transfer voice over current cell networks to the Skype network. Such well-known solution is Fring free VoIP client software that actually encode voice with AMR codec and transfer it to its server.
But I think Skype is losing to traditional VoIP clients in consumer phones. There is a lot of free SIP VoIP clients for Symbian even embedded into phones like in Nokia Internet Edition devices N80, N73 etc. If Skype will waiting too long it might completely lose this battle to companies like Betamax (VoipDiscount, VoipCheap brands).

Open Adobe PDF documents on Symbian devices

If you have a Nokia or other Symbian OS-based device, then you might want to read PDF dociments on it. In this case you sould use sone third-party application to do it. Because Symbian doesn't support Adobe PDF documents natively. There is three options: mBrainsoftware's Pdf+ for viewing PDF files with Nokia S60 devices, Documents to Go to use with UIQ and Series 80 and native Adobe Reader LE 1.1 for some Symbian devices. Pdf+ viewer lets you view stored PDF files, read password-protected PDF files, and display all the text, line drawings and images within a PDF document. Also you can search and follow hyperlinks in the Adobe PDF file, and view and follow bookmarks. The Documents to Go by DataViz provides the same capabilities only in professional version. The simpliest application is Adobe Reader, but the main advantage is no cost of it, you can download it for many models from Nokia website.

Convert Visual Studio 2005 solution and project to VS 2003 format

In some cases you would need to convert somebody's project in VS 2005 format into format of your VS 2003. There are no such convertion tools build into new or old studios. The solution is to download UnPrjConvertor application from this page. You can run this app to convert VS2005 solution into VS2003 or VS 6.0 formats. Also it converts projects .vcproj into .dsw format. But I can't to convert VC project file from VS2005 to VS 2003 format by this application. I've found that you just need to change version of file format in the .vcproj file from 8,00 to 7,10 and this file will successfully load in 2003 studio. Some of these projects will compile, some not, but most of them wiill.

New Apple's iPhone in competition to Nokia Symbian smartphones

News from Apple about iPhone rise company's stocks up to 8%, but I think it not scares smartphone manufacturers like Nokia because Apple has made too much mistakes. Here they are:
- first of all, it's a convergence era so devices should have all the features and use it successfully, but in iPhone there are lack of HSDPA, GPS, WiFi sync and more, second of all - it's not a smartphone, so I don't know how you suppose to make a new game or other killer-app for it. You can't even extend functionality of it for support VPN or your favourite VoIP provider. The design is stylish but this is a true PPC size and many of people don't like it because the size not really fit their pockets. And who would buy this phone? Owner of iPod already have it with phone in other pocket.
So I think there are nothing to worry about for manufacturers like Nokia, but there are problems for Blackberry and WM5 guys.
